Client: Monterey Bay Aquarium, Blue Rhino Studio

Role: Interactive design, custom software development, interactive media production, wiring, hardware specification

Primary Goal: Make sculptures of bioluminescent animals illuminate and come to life.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s newest exhibit is “Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean.” Since live animals from the bottom of the sea floor cannot survive in the aquarium, they wanted to make sculptures as lifelike as possible.

Blue Rhino Studio and Drumminhands Design combined talents to take on the task. We built custom software and wired hardware to mimic three different species rarely ever scene before. The lights move and shine thru the sculptures to appear to be the bioluminescent animals. Each sculpture is controllable via DMX and MadMapper.
